Wildlife Safari: Weekly Wander

Wildlife Safari: Weekly Wander

This was yet another on of our last minute trips. I have to say, this wildlife safari is probably the best one yet.

In my boredom at work I googled “things to do in Oregon”. Wildlife Safari was one of the first things I saw. I went home that night and was so excited to tell the family that were going. Unfortunately they were all asleep. So the next morning I said to my wife, “Do you want to go to the Oregon Vortex or the Wildlife Safari?”. She let the kids decide. I’m pretty sure it was the two hour drive verses the three hour drive that influenced their decision.

Wildlife Safari, located in Winston, Oregon, was started by Frank Hart in 1972. It features over 500 different animals on over 400 acres of land. And yes you get to drive through it. Wildlife Safari is the only drive-through animal park in Oregon. It is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Summer hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The price was a little steep but worth it. Adults cost $19.95, while children ages 3-12 cost $13.95. They do have a Groupon available if you plan ahead.

The Wildlife Safari has what they call encounters. They seem to range from $10 to $20 extra but you get to do things like take a picture with a cheetah, feed giraffes treats, and see the elephants up close. They also have camel rides. The Safari Village is free and has a petting zoo, gift shop, and cafe.

All in all, it is a great place to take the kids on a sunny afternoon. Just beware of the extremely large bird who tries to break out your window.
